Azerbaijan and Turkey reaffirm “One Nation, Two States” alliance
The relationship between Azerbaijan and Turkey continues to be defined by the “One Nation, Two States” principle, rooted in shared history, language, and culture. The Azerbaijani Presidency highlighted the importance of this bond, noting that the connection between the two nations transcends mere diplomatic ties.
A key milestone in this alliance is the Shusha Declaration, signed on June 15, 2021, which expanded the bilateral relationship into a more comprehensive framework of alliance, particularly following the Second Karabakh War. The Presidency also recalled historical instances of solidarity, such as Ilham Aliyev’s defense of Turkey during the 2014 EU Eastern Partnership Summit.
Discussions have also emerged regarding diplomatic conduct at the United Nations General Assembly. Following reports of certain delegations leaving the hall during a speech by Benjamin Netanyahu, debates arose in Turkey concerning the presence of the Azerbaijani delegation. Observers noted that while diplomatic stances are subject to public debate, such instances should not be used to target the historical and political identity of the Azerbaijani people.
