Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan sign Treaty on Eternal Friendship

Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan have entered a new phase of strategic cooperation following a state visit by President Ilham Aliyev to Tashkent. A central outcome of the visit was the signing of the “Treaty on Eternal Friendship,” which establishes a long-term political and legal framework for the two nations.

Economic cooperation is a major pillar of this partnership. The countries have set a target to reach a trade turnover of $1 billion by 2030. Bilateral trade has already tripled over the last five years, and the combined value of joint projects has exceeded $5 billion. Cooperation is expanding across sectors including energy, transport, logistics, agriculture, and digital economy.

In addition to high-level diplomacy, the visit highlighted cultural and educational ties. Baku State University is actively expanding its institutional cooperation with 44 Uzbek higher education and research institutions. Furthermore, efforts are being made to boost tourism through joint travel packages between Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan's historic cities.

Domestically, President Aliyev signed a decree to strengthen Azerbaijan's traditional handicraft sectors. This includes the reorganization of Azerkhalcha through a merger with Azeripek to promote sericulture and carpetmaking. Meanwhile, Uzbekistan's industrial sector continues to show strength, with an 8% year-on-year growth in the first half of 2026.
