Azerbaijan expands renewable energy and regional strategic role

Azerbaijan is advancing significant energy and geopolitical initiatives across the region. Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov announced that the country expects to commission 11 to 15 solar and wind power plants by the end of 2027. This first phase of renewable energy development will have a combined capacity of approximately 2 gigawatts, supported by an estimated $2 billion in private investment and $600 million in public funding. Long-term goals include developing 8 gigawatts of capacity by 2032, with ongoing projects involving international firms such as Masdar, ACWA Power, and BP.

In a separate diplomatic context, President Ilham Aliyev addressed the 7th CICA Summit in Baku, where he criticized the use of double standards in resolving interstate conflicts. Meanwhile, analysts note Azerbaijan’s growing strategic importance as a transit hub and bridge between Europe and Asia, particularly through the development of the Middle Corridor.

In neighboring Kazakhstan, the Ministry of Energy has backed 253 projects to modernize over 11,000 kilometers of electricity networks as part of a national utility upgrade plan. In Kyrgyzstan, the Ministry of Finance, supported by the Asian Development Bank, has launched an assessment to strengthen disaster recovery readiness and institutional coordination.
