Azerbaijan authorities solve 2019 murder and disappearance case

Azerbaijani prosecutors and internal affairs agencies have solved a high-profile murder case involving a man who went missing seven years ago. The investigation revealed that Nadir Mammadov, a resident of Goytapa in the Cəlilabad district, was killed in 2019.

According to official findings, Ramiz Alakbarov, an acquaintance of the victim, killed Mammadov as an act of revenge. On April 23, 2019, Alakbarov took advantage of Mammadov being under the influence of alcohol, forced him into a vehicle, and transported him to a private residence in the Teze Alvadi village of the Masally district.

Investigators determined that Alakbarov strangled Mammadov and subsequently attempted to conceal the crime by throwing the body into an unused water well on his property. Although the criminal case had been suspended in October 2022 due to the inability to locate the victim, renewed coordinated investigative and operational-search activities eventually linked the disappearance to this intentional homicide.
