Azerbaijan bans 31 Turkish citizens from entering the country

Azerbaijan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has declared 31 Turkish citizens ‘undesirable persons’, banning them from entering the country. The decision, announced on October 21, 2026, follows statements made by the individuals on social media and internet platforms.

The Ministry cited several justifications for the ban, including remarks that allegedly target Azerbaijan's sovereignty, national security, and constitutional order. Additionally, the authorities accused the individuals of inciting religious radicalism, violence, and hatred, as well as calling for the forcible change of the government.

The list of banned individuals includes a diverse group of political figures, journalists, bloggers, academics, and religious figures. Notable names include Yeniden Refah Party leader Fatih Erbakan, DEM Party MP Ömer Faruk Gergerlioğlu, HÜDA PAR Vice President Yahya Uğraş, theologian Mehmet Boynukalın, and sports commentator Ahmet Çakar.

The move comes amid heightened diplomatic tensions between Baku and Ankara, partly fueled by controversies regarding school dress codes and religious attire in Azerbaijan.
