Azerbaijan Central Bank Holds Rate at 6.5% as Banking Profit Surges
The Central Bank of Azerbaijan (CBA) kept its refinancing rate unchanged at 6.5% on 31 July 2026, leaving the interest‑rate corridor at a lower bound of 5.5% and an upper bound of 7.5%. The decision was based on stable inflation – 12‑month inflation measured 5.8% in June – and a pronounced excess of foreign‑exchange supply over demand. The CBA intervened with purchase‑oriented operations, with exchange offices buying about $482 million in cash foreign currency during the first half of the year. Currency reserves rose by $2.2 billion (19.5%) to $13.8 billion, and customs data showed a positive trade balance of roughly $8 billion in the same period. Money‑order balances increased by $540.6 million, up 82.8% year‑on‑year.
During the reporting month the Azerbaijani banking sector recorded a net profit of 716.3 million manats ($421.4 million), a 24.2% rise from the comparable period last year. Operating profit climbed to 1.09 billion manats (+23.3%) and profit tax paid reached 171.1 million manats (+27.6%). Employment grew by 0.3% (88 staff) to a total of 27,462 employees across 504 branches, 83 service offices and 3,503 ATMs. The CBA also outlined ongoing capital‑market reforms, including plans to introduce securitisation, derivatives, sukuk, venture‑capital and crowdfunding instruments.
