Azerbaijan education sector faces teacher recruitment and rural staffing challenges

Recent discussions in Azerbaijan have highlighted concerns among teacher candidates regarding the impact of attire on interview outcomes. Former deputy and honored teacher Sona Aliyeva addressed these concerns, stating that while professional and neat clothing is appropriate, the primary focus of interviews should remain on pedagogical skills, communication culture, and professional knowledge rather than appearance.

Separately, education expert Israyil Isgenderyov addressed the ongoing shortage of teachers in rural areas and remote villages across various regions of the country. While temporary employment contracts are used to fill vacancies—often due to maternity leaves or other transitions—there is a persistent difficulty in attracting educators to schools far from district centers. Isgenderyov emphasized the importance of ensuring all students, particularly those in remote areas, have access to quality education and suggested that implementing concessions for teachers in these regions could be a positive step.
