Azerbaijan official criticizes UN limitations at Security Council meeting

Tale Aliyev, First Secretary of the Permanent Mission of Azerbaijan to the United Nations, addressed a UN Security Council Arria-formula meeting regarding the protection of international law during armed conflicts. Aliyev emphasized that true peace is impossible without justice and accountability.

He criticized the limitations of the international system, noting that the United Nations and other international organizations failed to prevent aggression against Azerbaijan or end the nearly three-decade-long occupation of its territories. Aliyev highlighted that armed conflicts continue to be characterized by serious violations of international law, high civilian casualties, and the intentional targeting of civilian infrastructure.

Aliyev called on the international community to combat impunity, support victims and survivors, and fight disinformation campaigns designed to shield perpetrators of serious crimes. He stressed that political will is essential to ensure that states fulfill their obligations to investigate violations and hold responsible individuals accountable under international law.
