Azerbaijan DTX detains 10 in multi-country counterterrorism operations

Azerbaijan’s State Security Service (DTX) has conducted parallel counterterrorism operations across five countries, resulting in the detention of ten individuals. The operations targeted a group allegedly involved in secret organization, preparation for terrorist acts, and the financing of terrorism.

According to the DTX, the group planned to assassinate Azerbaijani public and religious figures. Investigators found that members had monitored the movements and security arrangements of their intended targets and had planned to flee to international conflict zones following the attacks.

The investigation identified criminal links between Vugar Abdullayev, a convicted member of the ‘Sumgayit Jamaat’ extremist group, and several Azerbaijani citizens, including Jalal Hajiyev. Hajiyev is alleged to have organized the financing of individuals participating in armed conflicts abroad, including members of internationally recognized terrorist organizations, using cryptocurrency systems.

Authorities also discovered that the group used fake advertisements on social media, disguised as fundraising for religious rituals, to collect funds for these activities.
