Azerbaijan tourism highlights historical sites and natural landscapes

Azerbaijan offers a diverse range of cultural and natural attractions, from the historic streets of Baku to its unique geological formations. In the capital, the UNESCO World Heritage site of Icherisheher (the Old City) features medieval walls, the Maiden Tower, and the Palace of Shirvanshahs. The area also contains former caravanserais that once served Silk Road travelers.

Beyond the capital, the Gobustan State Historical and Artistic Reserve contains ancient rock carvings depicting animals, hunters, and boats. The region is also known for its mud volcanoes, which create moon-like landscapes. Often referred to as the ‘Land of Fire’ due to its natural gas reserves, the country remains a significant destination for international travelers, welcoming 2.5 million visitors from 198 countries in 2025.
