Azerbaijani citizen detained after crossing into Armenia

Armenia’s National Security Service (NSS) has confirmed that Yashar Qasimov, an Azerbaijani citizen, illegally entered Armenia’s Tavush province on October 19. The individual was spotted near the village of Aygedzor and subsequently detained.

The NSS characterized the incident as an accidental crossing, stating that Qasimov had become lost. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan confirmed during a weekly briefing that the individual would be returned to Azerbaijan. While some local reports suggested the crossing might have been an attempt to seek political asylum, Armenian authorities have maintained it was a navigational error caused by weather conditions.

This marks the second such incident in less than a month. It follows an October 1 event in the Syunik province where an Azerbaijani soldier reportedly entered Armenian territory and wounded a civilian. The recent crossing has renewed domestic concerns regarding border security and the transparency of the Armenian government’s response to border incursions.
