Azerbaijan's 3,200-Year-Old Ceremonial Kitchen Unveiled at Tava Tepe
Archaeologists have uncovered a ceremonial kitchen dating to roughly 3,200 years ago at the Tava Tepe site in western Azerbaijan. The structure, part of a Bronze Age settlement, was repeatedly rebuilt on the same spot, preserving earlier layers of ovens, pottery and food remains. Researchers from the University of Catania and the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences say the kitchen’s continuous reconstruction indicates a special communal role, with each new phase incorporating elements of the previous one.
The kitchen sits on an elevated earthen platform topped by a large circular hearth, surrounded by areas for food preparation and a collection of pots and bowls left in situ. Its architecture—an elevated, possibly roofed platform visible from a distance—differs from any other known Caucasian sites, suggesting a unique ritual or social function in the region during the late Bronze Age.
