Azevedo Family Hotel Group Acquires Sapientia Boutique Hotel in Coimbra

The Editory Collection Hotels, the hospitality arm of the Azevedo family that currently operates 12 hotels across Portugal, announced the purchase of the Sapientia Boutique Hotel – Books & Wine in Coimbra. The property, founded by musician André Sardet, Catarina Mesquita Dutra, journalist José Manuel Portugal and Maria Israel Portugal, is the only boutique hotel situated in Coimbra’s UNESCO‑listed Alta district, near the Joanina Library and the University Tower.

The acquisition, expected to be finalised by the end of 2026, will extend the group’s presence in historic urban destinations. The statement said the integration will preserve the hotel’s distinctive identity, retain its 27 employees and keep its amenities—including a bar, an outdoor courtyard and a 360‑degree rooftop view of the river and city. The Azevedo family already runs five hotels in Porto, three in the Algarve, two in Madeira, and one each in Lisbon and Viana do Castelo, with this move marking their entry into Coimbra.
