Aziz Aga Bridge and Ulan Lake: Notable Natural and Historical Landmarks

The Aziz Aga Bridge, located near Trikoumo in Grevena, Greece, is a significant historical stone arch bridge built in 1727. Spanning the Venetikos River, it measures 75 meters in length and 15 meters in height, featuring a central arch with a 28-meter span, making it one of the largest of its kind in Macedonia.

Local legend recounts that the bridge collapsed twice during construction when the wooden molds were removed. The master builder reportedly hid during the third attempt to ensure success, after which the financier, Aziz Aga, rewarded him generously.

In the Alxa region of Mongolia, Ulan Lake, known as the ‘Heart of the Earth,’ presents a unique natural phenomenon within the Tengger Desert. The lake appears heart-shaped from above, characterized by deep blood-red waters and white salt crusts that resemble veins.

The striking coloration is caused by high salt concentrations that support specialized microorganisms, insects, and algae, which secrete red pigments. The visual intensity peaks during July and August due to high evaporation rates, though the lake shifts through shades of pink, orange, and white depending on the season.
