Azores and Catalonia strengthen strategic ocean alliance

The Azores Regional Government and the Government of Catalonia have strengthened their strategic alliance through the “Smart Oceans: Sustainability, Technology and Economic Growth” international forum. Held in Angra do Heroísmo on Terceira Island, the event focuses on bilateral cooperation regarding marine ecosystem preservation, the blue economy, and maritime technology.

During the opening session, Azores Vice-President Artur Lima and Catalonia's Delegate to Portugal, Rui Reis, emphasized the importance of connecting the Atlantic and Mediterranean regions. Key areas of collaboration include scientific and technological research, decarbonization of maritime infrastructure, biodiversity protection, and the digital transition of ports.

The forum involves various institutions, including the University of the Azores and the United Nations Ocean Decade Collaborative Centre for a Sustainable Ocean Economy. The program includes technical visits to the Port of Praia da Vitória and the TERINOV technology park to showcase innovation in sustainability.
