Azores and Madeira report on wine production and harvest progress
Wine production in the Azores is expected to reach a normal level in 2026, with forecasts predicting between 600 and 700 tons of grapes suitable for Geographical Indication (IG) and Denomination of Origin (DO) classifications. Cláudio Lopes, president of the Azores Wine and Vine Institute (IVV), noted that while climatic adversity affected some stages of the vegetative cycle, the final quality and quantity are expected to be acceptable. This follows a record-breaking 2025, where grape production in the archipelago reached 1,048 tons, led by the island of Pico, which produced 956 tons.
In Madeira, the grape harvest is progressing as expected. Since the official start on August 24, eight wine companies have processed 515 tons of grapes from 268 growers. The predominant variety is tinta negra. For the 2025 campaign, regional authorities provided 2.7 million euros in support to producers, with 1.6 million euros specifically allocated to the wine aging process. In 2025, Madeira wine sales totaled approximately 3.1 million liters, generating 20.6 million euros in revenue, representing a slight decrease in both volume and value compared to 2024.
