Azores and Madeira secure 500-ton bigeye tuna quota
The regional governments of the Azores and Madeira have successfully secured an additional 500-ton quota for bigeye tuna for 2026 through coordination with the Portuguese central government. This decision allows for the reopening of bigeye tuna fishing, an opportunity that has been unavailable to the sector for several years.
The reopening of the fishery has officially entered into force. To ensure sustainability, fishing operations—including capture, maintenance on board, transshipment, and landing—are restricted to one trip per 48-hour period. Additionally, maximum catch limits will be applied based on the vessel's length.
This achievement follows an understanding agreement established between the two autonomous regions in January 2025, aimed at promoting resource sustainability and economic stability.
