Azores autonomy: Historical reflections and budget concerns

As the Azores mark 50 years of regional autonomy, former regional leader Mota Amaral has emphasized the historical importance of unity among the nine islands. Reflecting on the first regional government established in September 1976, Mota Amaral noted that maintaining a unified project was essential to overcoming local rivalries and securing benefits, such as the 1979 American aid program, for the entire archipelago rather than specific islands.

In a separate political development, the Liberal Initiative (IL/Açores) expressed concerns regarding the proposed 2027 Regional Budget. Following meetings with Regional Government leader José Manuel Bolieiro, party coordinator Hugo Almeida stated that the budget lacks significant changes from previous years and fails to address the need for deep reforms. The IL highlighted the necessity for progressive reinforcement of fiscal autonomy and raised concerns over a 160 million euro debt reconversion, which they suggest will impact future taxpayers. While the party noted that no tax increases are currently planned for 2027, they continue to advocate for structural changes to the Regional Finance Law.
