Algarve tourism and real estate sectors show significant growth

Portugal is experiencing significant shifts in its tourism and real estate sectors. In the Algarve, tourism activity has reached new heights, with July 2026 seeing a record number of overnight stays. Domestic tourism is a major driver, with Portuguese residents increasing their stays by 3.9%. The region's tourism revenue has also surged, surpassing one billion euros in the first seven months of the year.

The Algarve's real estate market is also evolving, particularly in the high-end segment. The region has become the second most dynamic luxury residential market in Portugal, characterized by a high density of luxury villas rather than apartments. However, rental costs remain high, with the Algarve averaging €22 per square metre, making it one of the most expensive areas in the country.

In other parts of Portugal, housing prices continue to rise, with Braga seeing a 12.1% annual increase in property prices. Meanwhile, the public enterprise sector in Madeira has successfully reduced its financial debt by 221 million euros compared to the previous year.

On a broader scale, Eurostat reports that tourism across the European Union grew by 1.7% in the first half of 2026, reaching 1.321 billion overnight stays, driven largely by an increase in international visitors.
