Azores confirms Newcastle disease in wild birds

The Azores Regional Government has confirmed the presence of Newcastle disease in wild birds across several islands, including Graciosa, Terceira, Pico, São Miguel, Santa Maria, and Faial. The virus has specifically been identified in rock pigeons and Eurasian collared doves.

In response to the outbreak, authorities have implemented a ban on pigeon hunting and bird fairs throughout the region. The ban on hunting rock pigeons is set to remain in effect indefinitely to prevent transmission and potential risks related to human consumption.

While the disease is highly contagious among bird populations and can impact the productivity of domestic poultry, the government stated that the risk to the general human population is considered low. Human infection is described as rare and typically mild, usually occurring only through direct and close contact with infected birds. Currently, all laboratory results for poultry have returned negative for the virus.
