Azores faces fuel price hikes and political scrutiny

The Azores region is facing several political and economic challenges. Regional Finance Secretary Duarte Freitas announced that fuel prices will rise in September, citing international market volatility and conflicts involving Russia, Ukraine, and the US as unavoidable drivers of the increase.

In the political sphere, the Chega party has proposed the creation of national and inter-island airfares to make travel more affordable for mainland Portuguese tourists and to boost regional tourism. The party also questioned the regional government's tourism strategy, demanding transparency regarding investment in target markets and the effectiveness of promotional campaigns.

Additionally, the Iniciativa Liberal party has criticized the regional government for leaving a 1.3 million euro fishing support infrastructure in São Mateus, Terceira, closed three months after its inauguration. Deputy Nuno Barata requested clarification on why the facility remains unused despite being formally completed.
