Azores Government promotes senior economy to address aging population

Artur Lima, Vice-President of the Azores Government, has called for a deep reflection on the challenges of population aging and the development of a ‘senior economy’ to promote inclusion and community participation.

Speaking at the 164th anniversary of Lar D. Pedro V on Terceira Island, Lima highlighted the ‘Novos Idosos’ (New Elderly) program. This social initiative aims to support active aging by providing financial aid and specialized technical assistance at home, allowing seniors to remain in their original communities.

The program has reported positive outcomes among participants, including improvements in cognitive functions for 60%, reduced loneliness for 80%, and increased life satisfaction for 90% of those involved.
