Azores health authorities confirm norovirus outbreak across multiple islands

The Azores Regional Health Authority has confirmed a norovirus outbreak affecting several islands in the Portuguese archipelago, including São Miguel, Faial, and Pico. Health officials reported an increase in acute gastroenteritis cases that is “above the expected” levels for this time of year.

While the virus is highly contagious and causes symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea, authorities stated the situation is “not cause for alarm,” as most patients recover at home within one to three days. In Ponta Delgada, officials also noted isolated instances of intestinal bacteria, including Salmonella and Campylobacter, emphasizing the importance of food hygiene.

There is currently no evidence linking the outbreak to the public water supply. Transmission rates appear to be declining in some areas; specifically, the effective reproduction number in Faial has been below one since August 19, and cases in Flores and Terceira have also shown a downward trend.
