Azores honors historical tuna fishing contribution in the Eastern Pacific

The Azores Government has announced an initiative titled ‘Tribute to the Portuguese Contribution to Tuna Fishing in the Eastern Pacific’ to honor the maritime history of Portuguese fishermen, specifically those from the Azores. The project aims to highlight the historical and economic legacy of Azorean involvement in tuna fishing in the Eastern Pacific Ocean.

In partnership with the University of the Azores, the initiative includes two public sessions. The first, focused on scientific aspects, will take place on September 7 in Horta, on the island of Faial. The second, focusing on historical aspects, will be held on September 8 at the Whalers' Museum in Lajes do Pico, on the island of Pico. These sessions will involve researchers, government officials, and members of the fishing community to strengthen ties between the Azores, its diaspora, and the international scientific community.
