Azores leaders advocate for strategic importance in security and US relations
The Azores regional government and parliament are calling for increased recognition of the archipelago's geostrategic importance regarding national security, defense, and maritime and aerial surveillance.
During a ceremony commemorating the 250th anniversary of United States independence, Azorean President José Manuel Bolieiro emphasized the historical and strategic role of the islands in relations between Portugal and the US. He advocated for deepening transatlantic cooperation, citing opportunities in science, deep-sea research, renewable energy, and technological innovation.
Separately, the Azores Legislative Assembly approved a resolution recommending that the Portuguese Republic recognize the region's centrality in national security and defense policies. The resolution, proposed by Iniciativa Liberal, seeks to enhance the operational value of the Lajes Air Base on Terceira Island. It argues that the archipelago's North Atlantic position is vital for European and North American cooperation, logistics, and crisis response.
