Azores political parties raise concerns over budget and infrastructure

Political parties in the Azores are raising critical questions regarding regional governance and infrastructure. The Socialist Party (PS) has stated that its vote on the 2027 Budget Plan will depend on the Regional Government's response to economic issues, specifically the rising cost of living and the decline in tourism revenue. PS leader Francisco César emphasized that the party seeks negotiation rather than rupture, noting that the 2027 budget proposal includes a total investment of 1,057 million euros, with increased funding for health and tourism.

Simultaneously, the Chega party has formally questioned the Regional Government regarding the replacement of the inter-island submarine cable system. The party warned that the current infrastructure, installed in 1998, has exceeded its estimated 25-year lifespan. Chega leader José Pacheco described the cables as critical infrastructure for hospitals, schools, banks, and the regional economy, demanding concrete actions rather than further studies to prevent potential mechanical failures.
