Azores Regional Government disputes claims of tourism decline

The Regional Government of the Azores has rejected assertions that the archipelago is experiencing an “alarming drop” in tourism. During an emergency debate in the Regional Legislative Assembly, Berta Cabral, the Secretary for Tourism, Mobility, and Infrastructure, defended the sector's performance.

Cabral noted that while the region has seen a reduction in overnight stays for 11 consecutive months, 2025 was recorded as the best year for tourism in the Azores. She further indicated that 2026 revenues are expected to exceed 2025 levels, with guest and overnight stay figures remaining above 2024 benchmarks. She emphasized that increasing flight routes is a demanding process that yields medium-term results.

Other political figures raised concerns during the debate. José Pacheco, leader of Chega/Azores, criticized high airfare prices and called for a long-term strategic tourism plan. Additionally, the government acknowledged that the Azores are increasingly perceived as an expensive destination due to high costs in accommodation, dining, and car rentals.
