Azores scientific mission monitors marine protected areas

A multidisciplinary scientific campaign is underway in the Azores to study and monitor Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) within the Portuguese Exclusive Economic Zone. The mission, supported by the research vessel Mário Ruivo, aims to characterize marine biodiversity, deep-sea benthic habitats, and vulnerable ecosystems to support sustainable management and conservation plans.

As part of the research, the Autonomous Surface Vehicle (ASV) Caravel, developed by the Laboratory of Systems and Underwater Technology (LSTS) at the University of Porto, is being deployed. The Caravel is undergoing real-world testing following a transatlantic crossing from Porto to the Azores to monitor ocean conditions over long durations.

The campaign involves collaboration between the Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), the University of the Azores, and the Okeanos Marine Science Research Institute. It also utilizes the Azores Ocean research vessel to enhance technological capacity for studying deep-sea biological communities and biogeochemical ocean conditions.
