Azores tourism sees consecutive monthly declines in stays and arrivals
Tourism in the Azores is experiencing a sustained decline, according to recent statistical data. In June, overnight stays in tourist accommodations fell for the ninth consecutive month, recording 506,400 stays—a 3.8% decrease compared to the previous year. The domestic market saw a 9.2% drop, while external markets contributed 76% of the total with a 1.9% decline.
In July, the number of passengers disembarking at Azorean airports also fell for the seventh consecutive month, dropping 4.3% year-on-year to approximately 296,000 passengers.
Francisco César, leader of the Socialist Party (PS) in the Azores, warned that these trends could lead to reduced employment and lower family incomes. He criticized the Regional Government's strategy, calling for a more sustainable tourism policy focused on regular air connections, competitive pricing, and better promotion of all islands to prevent further economic impact.
