Portugal tourism accommodation sees 4% rise in May, Azores region records drop

Portugal's tourism accommodation sector recorded 3.3 million guests in May, up 3.9% year‑on‑year, according to the Instituto Nacional de Estatística (INE). Total revenues reached €755.7 million, with room‑only earnings at €575.1 million. The number of overnight stays grew 2.8% to eight million, while the average daily rate (ADR) rose to €130.9 and RevPAR to €84.0.

Foreign visitors contributed 5.9 million stays, with the United Kingdom remaining the largest market at 19% share despite a slight decline. Brazil and Germany posted the strongest growth (+9.3% and +8.6% respectively), while France saw the biggest fall (‑11.3%). Regionally, the Alentejo posted a 10% increase in stays and the North 6.7%; the Setúbal Peninsula and Alentejo recorded the highest gains in resident‑occupied rooms (+14% and +12.6%).

Conversely, the Azores archipelago experienced an eight‑month streak of falling tourist overnight stays, with a 2.2% YoY decline in May (448,700 stays). Local‑accommodation occupancy fell 8.1%, and resident tourism dropped 11%, underscoring a regional contrast to the national upturn.
