Azruddin Mohamed accuses Special Branch Head of assassination attempt

Guyanese Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed has accused Senior Superintendent Prem Narine, Head of the Special Branch, of orchestrating a premeditated assassination attempt against him. Following his release on bail from the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, Mohamed provided a detailed account of a shooting incident that occurred on the night of Monday, October 12, 2026, on Barr Street in Kitty.

Mohamed alleged that Narine opened fire on his vehicle without provocation and discharged shots at him at point-blank range. He further claimed that while he was prone on the asphalt, he was stomped on, and that masked tactical officers physically assaulted his videographer. Mohamed stated he was in the area to investigate a school gate incident involving injured children when the confrontation occurred.

Former Assistant Police Commissioner Paul Slowe has supported Mohamed’s claims, characterizing the government’s version of events as a setup. Mohamed noted that his vehicle had been searched earlier that evening in Parika for illegal weapons, but nothing was found, and he maintains that his presence in the Kitty area was for legitimate public interest matters.
