Azruddin Mohamed arrested after shooting near senior police official's home

Guyana opposition leader Azruddin Mohamed and two associates, Mario Mohamed and Eugene Thorne, were arrested following a late-night confrontation near the residence of Senior Superintendent Prem Narine in Georgetown.

According to the Guyana Police Force, Narine, head of the Special Branch, observed a black Toyota Allion driving slowly near his home. After hearing what sounded like a gunshot, Narine discharged his service weapon toward the vehicle. The car was later intercepted at the junction of Vlissengen Road and Sandy Babb Street. Police reported finding an unlicensed .32 Taurus pistol without a serial number and three live rounds of ammunition inside the vehicle.

Mohamed’s legal team disputes the police account, claiming they were filming what they described as an excessive police presence at Narine’s residence and that the police opened fire first. The incident has heightened tensions, as Narine is a key witness in an ongoing extradition case involving the Mohameds. The Guyanese government has vowed to apply the full force of the law, emphasizing the state's duty to protect witnesses from interference.
