Azruddin Mohamed extradition hearing resumes in Guyana

Legal proceedings regarding the extradition of opposition leader Azruddin Mohamed and his father, businessman Nazar Mohamed, to the United States have resumed in a Georgetown Magistrates’ Court. The proceedings follow a decision by the Caribbean Court of Justice to dismiss an appeal and discharge an interim stay, allowing the committal hearing to proceed before Chief Magistrate Judy Latchman.

During recent testimony, prosecutors admitted two key executive instruments into evidence: a Section 6 Certificate from the Minister of Foreign Affairs and an Authority to Proceed from the Minister of Home Affairs. These documents establish the statutory legal basis for the U.S. extradition request under the Fugitive Offenders Act.

Senior Superintendent Prem Narine, head of intelligence for the Guyana Police Force, provided testimony regarding the procedural handling of diplomatic documents and the execution of arrest warrants. While the extradition case is a distinct legal matter, it has gained significant attention alongside a separate police investigation into an alleged drone incident near President Irfaan Ali’s residence. The Court of Appeal has directed that no final determination be made by the Magistrate while a constitutional appeal remains pending.
