Azruddin Mohamed granted bail on firearm and obstruction charges
Guyana opposition leader Azruddin Mohamed, head of the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party, has been granted bail following his arrest after a shooting incident in Kitty, Georgetown. Mohamed, along with driver Eugene Thorne and videographer Mario Mohamed, appeared before Principal Magistrate Faith McGusty on October 16, 2026. They were charged with the unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, as well as attempting to obstruct the course of justice.
The charges stem from an October 12 incident outside the residence of Senior Superintendent Prem Narine, head of the Guyana Police Force’s Special Branch. Police report that Narine discharged his service weapon toward Mohamed’s vehicle after hearing what sounded like gunfire. A subsequent search of the vehicle allegedly uncovered a .32 Taurus pistol and ammunition.
Mohamed’s defense team has vehemently contested the charges, alleging that the firearm was planted and that the incident is a “calculated attempt” to eliminate him politically. Defense attorney Siand Dhurjon questioned the handling of the vehicle and the absence of CCTV footage. Additionally, Mohamed has alleged he was sexually assaulted by an inmate while in police custody, a claim his legal team has addressed in the context of the ongoing legal proceedings.
The incident is closely linked to ongoing extradition proceedings in the United States involving Mohamed and his father, Nazar Mohamed, regarding alleged financial crimes.
