AZTI to use ecological models for Gulf of Biscay restoration

AZTI has joined the MORSE (Models Supporting Practical Restoration Of Habitats In Europe's Seas) project, a Horizon Europe initiative coordinated by the Finnish Environment Institute (Syke). Running until 2030, the project aims to use ecological and climate models to assist administrations in determining effective marine restoration measures.

In the Basque coast, AZTI will focus on three primary areas: marine megafauna, blue carbon ecosystems, and the seabed. Research will involve studying the distribution and ecological needs of seabirds and cetaceans to identify conservation priorities. Additionally, the center will evaluate intertidal seagrass meadows and halophyte vegetation in estuaries to enhance their carbon sequestration capabilities.

Finally, the study will analyze the impact of bottom trawling on sedimentary seafloor communities on the Basque continental shelf. By combining species distribution models, climate change scenarios, and cumulative pressure assessments, the project seeks to compare the efficacy of reducing environmental pressures versus active restoration or marine protected area scenarios.
