Azucena, Tabasco: Riots erupt following death of local resident
Violent unrest erupted in the Azucena community of Cárdenas, Tabasco, on August 16, 2026, following the death of a local resident, Gabriel Osorio. Residents set fire to several emergency vehicles, including three ambulances and three PREV units, and attacked the municipal delegation.
The conflict stems from conflicting accounts of Osorio's death on August 13. Local inhabitants allege that the young man was being pursued and subsequently struck by a police patrol vehicle. Conversely, the State Guard reported that their officers were in the area responding to a domestic violence call and were surrounded and attacked by residents while attempting to depart.
In response to the arson and attacks on law enforcement, a security operation was deployed involving the State Guard, the Navy, the 57th Battalion, Grupo Tabasco, and municipal personnel. Residents continue to demand transparency regarding whether the death was an accident or an intentional act by authorities.
