Azuqueca de Henares begins September festivities honoring cyclist José Luis Viejo

The September festivities in Azuqueca de Henares have officially commenced with the designation of the Peña Ciclista José Luis Viejo as the ‘Popular of the Year 2026’. During the inaugural proclamation from the Town Hall balcony, Vanesa Viejo, daughter of the late cyclist José Luis Viejo, honored her father’s legacy.

Viello is celebrated for his historic 160-kilometer solo breakaway during the 1976 Tour de France, a feat marking 50 years in 2026. Vanesa Viejo described her father as a ‘seal of identity’ for Azuqueca, noting that his victories brought unity and pride to the town.

Mayor Miguel Óscar Aparicio officially opened the week of celebrations with the traditional ‘chupinazo’ following the proclamation. The festivities also included a children's proclamation by members of the Local Council of Children and Adolescents, who advocated for safe and sustainable celebrations.
