AZWAY survey reveals 59% of gym members experience 'ghost membership
A survey conducted by AZWAY involving 300 individuals aged 20 to 60 reveals high rates of gym membership attrition in Japan. The study found that 72.6% of respondents have already canceled their gym memberships, while only 22.7% report attending a gym at least once a week.
Approximately 59.0% of participants reported being 'ghost members'—individuals who continue to pay monthly membership fees despite not attending the facility. Among those who experienced being a ghost member, 37.6% reported wasting 10,000 yen or more in fees. The most common reason cited for stopping attendance was a lack of motivation or finding the process troublesome (47.0%).
The survey also highlighted a key differentiator for long-term members: location. Among those who successfully continued their gym habits, 64.7% emphasized that choosing a gym with a convenient location was a primary factor. Consequently, 57.3% of respondents stated that proximity to home or work would be their top criterion when selecting a future gym.
