British Columbia to pilot new forestry zone-based management system

British Columbia is launching a pilot program for a new landscape-level forestry management system. Forests Minister Ravi Parmar stated the initiative aims to simplify forest management through three distinct zones: a conservation or protection zone for habitat, a multiple-use zone for ecosystem function, and a working forest zone for harvesting.

The province is collaborating with First Nations and other stakeholders to select pilot locations, with announcements expected this fall. The plan follows recommendations from the 2020 Old Growth Strategic Review and the Provincial Forestry Advisory Council.

According to Parmar, the new system is intended to reduce permit complexity and wait times for lumber companies while addressing timber access issues. The model includes a ‘no net loss provision,’ requiring that any resources taken from the working forest must be replaced. Additionally, the framework is expected to assist in wildfire mitigation and better balance timber extraction with ecosystem protection.
