Industrial closures hit Wolters Brewery and Baťa

Two major industrial closures are highlighting economic shifts in Europe.

In Germany, the historic Wolters Brewery, founded in 1627, will close its production facility in Braunschweig by the end of 2026. The closure affects approximately 90 employees and follows an unsuccessful search for investors. The company cited declining beer sales and rising energy and production costs as primary drivers for the insolvency proceedings.

In Central Europe, the footwear giant Baťa has announced it will phase out production at its only remaining manufacturing plant in the region, located in Dolní Němčí, Czech Republic. The closure, expected to take place throughout 2027, will impact 92 employees. Baťa officials stated that the facility, which was designed for large-scale production, is no longer profitable under current market demands and that the investment required to modernize it would not be economically viable. While manufacturing is ending, Baťa intends to maintain its retail presence in the Czech Republic.
