Başakşehir recycling volumes increase tenfold in seven years
Recycling volumes in Başakşehir have increased tenfold over the past seven years. According to Environmental Engineer Hicran Çelik of the Başakşehir Municipality, daily recycling amounts have risen from approximately 7–10 tons in 2019 to over 100 tons today.
The municipality began zero waste initiatives in 2019 and became the first municipality to receive a zero waste certificate in 2021. Current efforts include providing zero waste training to schools, businesses, and public institutions to foster community awareness.
In addition to source separation, the municipality utilizes its ATY (waste-derived fuel) project to reintegrate non-recyclable materials back into the economy. Çelik noted that waste amounts tend to increase during the summer months due to higher usage of parks, picnic areas, and outdoor spaces.
