Kenya political landscape shifts ahead of 2027 elections
Political maneuvering in Kenya intensifies ahead of the 2027 General Election, with several key developments in Nairobi and across the country.
In Nairobi, the senatorial race is becoming increasingly competitive following the entry of Winnie Odinga and nominated Senator Crystal Asige. Asige, an advocate for disability rights, joined the race alongside Odinga and Lang’ata MP Phelix ‘Jalang’o’ Odiwuor. Meanwhile, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has downplayed concerns that Odinga’s candidacy might conflict with his own ambitions for the Nairobi governorship, stating that voters will ultimately decide.
In the gubernatorial race, supporters of Agnes Kagure have warned the united opposition against sidelining her or pushing her to run in Nyeri, threatening to support incumbent Governor Johnson Sakaja instead if the nomination process is not transparent.
Nationally, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is working to consolidate support in North Eastern Kenya, specifically in Garissa, Wajir, and Mandera, while affirming its affiliation with the current government. President William Ruto has also announced reforms for the New Kenya Cooperative Creameries (New KCC), aiming to decentralize factory ownership to local farmers and increase milk prices to Sh65 per litre.
Additionally, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna announced the first rally for his newly registered Linda Mwananchi Movement, scheduled for October 31 in Kwale County.
