Baby Boomer grandparents spend $4,000 annually on grandchildren

A survey by TheSeniorList involving 1,200 grandparents aged 55 and older indicates that Baby Boomers spend an average of $4,000 annually on their grandchildren. This spending manifests through gifts for special occasions (80%), toys and entertainment (58%), meals out (56%), and clothing or shoes (62%).

Experts suggest that Boomer grandparents are often driven by a desire to ensure physical needs are met, potentially due to growing up in eras of greater scarcity. Amy Deblase, clinical director for Let’s Talk Psychological Wellness, notes that this generation may place different values on basic versus emotional needs compared to their children.

Beyond material goods, Boomers provide significant support through childcare, with 42% of working parents relying on grandparents for babysitting.
