Baby in Contagem, Brazil fatally injured by kite line with cerol

Ravi Dias, a 1‑year‑9‑month‑old boy, died on 27 April in the Arvoredo II neighbourhood of Contagem, part of the Belo Horizonte metro area, after a kite line coated with cerol was caught on a passing motorcycle and struck his neck. The line caused a deep cervical wound; despite emergency care and transport to a local UPA, the injury proved fatal.

His 21‑year‑old sister, Nahuana de Oliveira Santos, witnessed the incident and told police that the child was in a baby carriage when the line hit. Police investigations identified a 19‑year‑old man who was flying the kite; he was arrested on the spot, confessed to using the cutting line, and was charged with involuntary homicide. The victim’s body was sent to the Instituto Médico Legal in Belo Horizonte for autopsy, and authorities are examining possible measures to curb the use of dangerous kite lines.
