UK baby Preston Davey murdered; abuse case exposes social services lapses

Preston Davey, a 13‑month‑old boy, was murdered in July 2023 after being adopted by gay couple Jamie Varley (37) and John McGowan‑Fazakerley (32). The toddler died from suffocation on an object lodged in his mouth following weeks of physical, sexual and psychological abuse. A 999 call made by McGowan‑Fazakerley in May recorded a voice in the background saying, “put it down,” but staff failed to act. Hospital nurses noted bruises on May 25 and again on June 30, yet the child's injuries were not linked to the abuse and police did not intervene.

The case has prompted criticism of social workers, who are accused of missing eight opportunities to protect Preston. Grandmother Debra Davey questioned whether fear of being labeled homophobic influenced the investigation. The tragedy also revealed a disturbing family history: Preston’s biological mother, Sarah, was a 14‑year‑old who, with a friend, tortured and killed a 71‑year‑old grandmother in the 1990s, later serving a life sentence.

Both the murders and the systemic failures have led to calls for reforms in child‑protection procedures and greater accountability for agencies involved.
