Babydoll dresses lead 2026 fashion revival as coquette aesthetic returns

The babydoll dress, first popular in the 1940s and later embraced by icons such as Twiggy, Jane Birkin and Courtney Love, has re‑emerged for the summer of 2026. Designers including Alexander McQueen, Chloé and Miu Miu have presented updated versions featuring puff sleeves, embroidery, chiffon and gingham, while stylists recommend rich neutrals and soft shades such as chocolate brown, navy and buttery yellow. The silhouette is being paired with chunky wedges, loafers or knee‑high boots for a modern, relaxed yet sophisticated look.

At the same time, the hyper‑feminine “coquette” aesthetic is returning with a softer edge. Brands like Dôen and Sézane are promoting the look online, and pigtail braids have become a signature detail. Sabrina Carpenter modeled pigtail braids at Dior’s Fall 2026 couture show in Paris, and Megan Moroney showcased the style at her Brooklyn concert. Missoni also featured pigtail braids on the runway in Milan, presenting them as a functional hairstyle for women on the go.
