BAC Panamá joins criminal probe into e-Tax fraud

BAC Panamá has announced its voluntary decision to join the criminal proceedings related to ‘Operación Pandora’. This investigation, led by the Public Ministry, focuses on irregularities within the e-Tax platform of the General Directorate of Revenues (DGI).

The case involves a corruption scheme where criminal networks allegedly manipulated the e-Tax 2.0 system to delete tax records and create fraudulent tax credits, resulting in an estimated loss of over $40 million to the National Treasury.

BAC Panamá stated that its participation aims to provide transparency and assist authorities with the traceability of operations involving the acquisition of these tax credits. The bank emphasized that payments were only made after the credits were officially certified on the DGI platform. The institution clarified that this voluntary action does not constitute an admission of responsibility and does not affect its financial stability or the security of client deposits.
