Bacalar official faces investigation over unauthorized archaeological site visit
The National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) has launched an administrative procedure following an unauthorized visit to an archaeological site in the community of Nuevo Jerusalén, Bacalar. The controversy arose after Diana Xuluc, the municipal Youth Coordinator for Bacalar, shared social media content featuring a tour of a Mayan pyramid at the site.
INAH confirmed that no authorization was granted for the visit and stated that the INAH Quintana Roo Center will lead the investigation to determine the circumstances of the entry and assign responsibility. The institution emphasized that all individuals and government entities must adhere to regulations regarding the protection of archaeological heritage.
In response to the controversy, Xuluc defended her actions, stating that the visit lasted approximately 10 minutes and was conducted with the guidance of local residents. She maintained that no vandalism or physical intervention of the vestiges occurred and that the purpose of the post was to promote the cultural richness of the Bacalar communities.
