Bach Mai Hospital doctors perform emergency surgery to save 14-year-old's fertility

Doctors at Bach Mai Hospital successfully performed emergency surgery to save the reproductive functions of a 14-year-old boy suffering from testicular torsion. The patient arrived at the emergency department experiencing intense scrotal pain that had persisted for approximately six hours.

Upon admission, the hospital activated an internal “red alert” protocol to expedite care. Within just 19 minutes of the patient's arrival, surgical teams reached the site of the torsion and successfully untwisted the spermatic cord. This rapid intervention restored blood flow to the testicular tissue, significantly increasing the chances of preserving the organ and the patient's future fertility.

According to Dr. Nguyen Minh Tuan, Head of the Department of Urology at Bach Mai Hospital, testicular torsion is a critical urological emergency common in adolescents aged 10 to 18. Medical guidelines from the European Association of Urology suggest that surgical intervention is most effective when performed within the first 4 to 6 hours of symptom onset, though immediate treatment remains vital even after this window to prevent necrosis.
