Bach Mai Hospital surgeons repair beating heart after rupture

Medical specialists at Bach Mai Hospital's Ninh Binh facility successfully performed emergency surgery on a 63-year-old woman suffering from a free wall rupture of the right ventricle following an acute myocardial infarction.

The patient arrived in critical condition with severe cardiogenic shock and fluid and blood accumulation in the pericardial cavity. Following a high-level internal “red alert” protocol, specialists from both the Hanoi and Ninh Binh branches of the hospital coordinated a treatment plan within two minutes.

The surgical team utilized a high-tech technique to repair the damage directly on the beating heart without the use of an extracorporeal circulation machine. This approach helped the patient avoid risks such as systemic inflammatory response and coagulation disorders. The rupture was repaired using the patient's own pericardium combined with specialized biological glue. Following the procedure, the patient stabilized quickly, was extubated the same evening, and regained consciousness within 24 hours.
